Earthquake
Questions to ask about California earthquake insurance
A standard homeowners policy generally does not cover earthquake damage. Earthquake coverage has its own structure, limits, deductibles, and eligibility considerations.
Translate the deductible
Ask what the stated deductible means in dollars for the dwelling limit being considered and whether different coverages have separate deductibles. Do not assume it works like a small fixed-dollar homeowners deductible.
Ask what each section protects
Review dwelling, personal property, loss of use, building-code considerations, breakables, masonry, and other limitations relevant to the property. Only the issued policy and endorsements define coverage.
Use the decision you are making
Ownership equity, emergency savings, temporary-housing needs, retrofit status, property type, and risk tolerance can shape the conversation. A licensed professional can explain available policy choices but cannot eliminate earthquake risk.
